Kinda personal, right? But it\u2019s a thing in the RV world\u2026 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, I\u2019m talking about your RV! (Mostly. \ud83d\ude09)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What\u2019s the Big Deal about RV Weight?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a Class A motorhome, you\u2019re not just driving a ton of weight down the road. It\u2019s actually more like <\/span><b>a dozen tons of weight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 or much more, depending on the size of your RV (and everything in it, including you).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a word, the big deal is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>SAFETY<\/strong><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overloading or improper distribution of RV weight can:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Affect control of your motorhome while driving or braking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add stress and wear and tear to chassis components, leading to damage and potential failure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cause catastrophic tire damage, resulting in a serious accident.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we\u2019re talking about tire safety and blowouts, I have to mention RettroBand\u00ae Wheel Enhancement, which is exclusively distributed by National Indoor RV Centers. These tables provide a reference for adjusting tire pressure to ensure optimal safety, performance and longevity of the tires.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>How Much Should an RV Weigh?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first place to start is knowing the basic limits of your RV. For instance, how much weight was it designed and built to carry? This information can be found on the \u201cstickers\u201d \u2013 or <strong>Federal Compliance labels<\/strong> \u2013 in each and every RVIA-certified motorhome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are generally located near the driver\u2019s door or on the wall near the driver\u2019s seat. It is possible to be under the GVWR and still exceed an axle rating, depending on how your RV is loaded (i.e., the weight distribution on each axle).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the maximum combined weight limit of your motorhome and the attached tow vehicle, including all passengers, cargo and liquids in each vehicle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What are the Maximum Allowable RV Weight Limits?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By examining the applicable Weight Ratings on the two stickers, we determined the maximum allowable weight limits for our motorhome, which are summarized below. This prevents issues such as uneven tire wear, swaying, and potential overloading, ultimately promoting a smoother and safer journey. This can be easier said than done, but we\u2019ll start where most of us do:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>At the Truck Stop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The easiest and fastest preliminary weigh-in method is on the CAT Scales at your nearest truck stop. It can be fun driving up on the CAT Scales, like the big boys and girls in the semi-trucks\u2026 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you know what you\u2019re doing!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re new to this process, here\u2019s a quick primer:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. We were under the weight limits based on axle weights and GCWR, including our tow vehicle. But hold on a minute\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>RV Weight Limitations of the CAT Scales<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As helpful as the CAT Scale weights are for overall weight and load on each axle, including the tow vehicle, it doesn\u2019t tell us anything about the weight distribution, side to side, on each wheel position, on the tires. This information is extremely important when it comes to safely and accurately managing tire pressures on all tires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>Note: <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless you know the load\/weight carried by each wheel position, you have no way to know the proper inflation of your tires. Improper inflation leads to improper wear, reduced life of the tire, and greater potential for rapid tire failure. <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/rvsafety.com\/weight\/wheel-position-rv-weighing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn more.<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Beyond the CAT Scales<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you just can&#8217;t find a place to get your RV weighed wheel-position-by-wheel-position, weighing on a platform scale gives you the basic starting information.
